What AI search means for Irish local businesses

More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for a recommendation instead of scrolling results. What that changes for a local business, and what to do.

A growing number of people no longer type a few words into Google and scroll. They ask a question in full. Who is a good dentist in Greystones? Which garage in Navan is open on Saturdays? And they get a written answer back.

That answer might come from ChatGPT, from Google's AI Overviews at the top of the results page, or from another assistant. Either way, it usually names a few businesses. The question for you is simple: are you one of them?

What AI search actually is

AI search tools read a huge amount of what is published online, then write a short answer to a question. When the question is local, they lean on the same signals Google has used for years: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and what other sites say about you.

There is no separate list to sign up for. You get named because the information about you is clear, consistent and easy to trust.

Why it matters for local businesses

An AI answer usually names two or three businesses, not ten. That makes the top spots more valuable, and being left out more costly.

The good news is that a small local business can do well here. AI tools care about clear, specific information. A family-run garage with a clear website and good reviews can be named ahead of a big chain with a vague one.

What helps you get named

  • A page for each service you offer, written in plain words.
  • Clear facts: where you are, the areas you cover, your hours, your prices where you can share them.
  • Answers to the questions customers really ask, on your own site.
  • Plenty of recent, genuine Google reviews.
  • The same name, address and phone number everywhere you are listed.

What does not help

Stuffing pages with keywords, copying text from other sites and publishing lots of thin articles nobody reads. These tricks did not work well on Google either, and AI tools are even better at ignoring them.

Do you still need Google?

Yes. Most local searches still happen on Google, and Google's own AI answers sit right on top of its results. The work that gets you into the Map Pack is largely the same work that gets you named by AI. You are not starting from scratch.

A practical first step

Ask an AI assistant about your own type of business in your town. See who it names and what it says. If you are missing, or the facts about you are wrong, that tells you where to start.

Then look at your website through a customer's eyes. Could someone understand what you do, where and for how much, in under a minute? If not, that is the first thing to fix.

If you would like a second opinion, our free website check covers this. We will tell you plainly how you look to someone searching right now.
